Love me some Flying Tigers Warhawk. The P-40 is such a good looking airplane. The shark mouth and kill stickers had me thinking Flying Tigers, but that doesn’t appear to be a correct livery according to Wikipedia pictures. Do you know if this is a correct livery, or is this just an approximation?

I think it’s an approximation, but the AVG did fly with Nationalist China roundel on their aircraft (now the Republic of China, or Taiwan). They were not officially members of the US Army Air Corps, and when the USAAC did finally take over operations in the CBI theater, the Flying Tigers were disbanded.

Followup: It’s similar, but the original AVG had a Flying Tigers logo on the side of the fuselage, and the underside was not painted blue. The brown was also a bit lighter. The logo on the port side of this aircraft is in memory of Tex Hill , one of the original AVG pilots. The logo on the starboard side is a recreation of a Flying Tigers logo.

Here’s a photo of the actual Flying Tigers taken in 1942.

I’m not well versed with the history of these planes or with AeroShell, but I see the Honda decals and the paint scheme and there’s no doubt it resembles this:

Ha! I hadn’t made that connection. However, the Honda sponsorship is for Honda generators. Red and white may well be official Honda corporate colors (as in the Japanese flag) but it also makes the planes highly visible in the air.

dang! How long of a lens did you have to use to get these shots?

I’m using a Tamron 70-200mm on a Canon 50D. Since the lens is full frame and the camera is APS-C, the crop factor means that it’s effectively 320mm. But this particular show is actually fairly close to the crowd, and that helps too.

I don’t know how I starred this when you originally posted it but then failed to comment on it. I’ve actually been up in the air with the AeroShell Aerobatic Team in those very same AT-6 Texans. It was a fucking fantastic experience and all the pilots are just amazingly cool dudes. Super awesome to talk to, friendly, funny guys. I love the two photos you posted. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks. What a thrill that must have been. I had never seen the team before, and it was a terrific show. What a great noise from those radials! I still haven’t managed to get back to editing the pictures. My aviation history articles are taking too much of my time right now.
